Practicing breath work and yoga postures helps calm and center our nervous system by moving us from a flight-or-flight response to a rest-and-digest state. Studies have shown that yoga can regulate our stress response system and decrease our heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory distress, cortisol levels and inflammation. Yoga also helps us to cultivate mindfulness by being fully engaged in the present moment. When we are focused on 'the now' it stops us from ruminating about the past or worrying about the future.
Typically we experience less anxiety when in a more relaxed state.
Evidence continues to show that a yoga practice is a relatively low-risk, high-yield approach to improving overall health. Yoga differs from other types of exercise in that there is a focus on the breath, and that a simple breathing practice can have a positive impact on our mental well-being.
